Military exercises are being organised by the British Ministry of Defence in the Mediterranean Spain has announced that it will not be making any protests over the presence of Tornado combat jets in Gibraltar, which will be coming to the Rock to take part in exercises in the Mediterranean. The jets will use the airport in Gibraltar during the training exercise. The Spanish consider the airport has been constructed on the isthmus, land occupied illegally by the British since the 19th century, but the fact that they will not be making any formal protest to the UK over the jets, does not mean that their historical demands have changed at all. The Tornado GR4 come from the Royal Air Force ninth Squadron, and the exercise will make the most of the summer weather conditions in the Mediterranean. HMS Diamond is also expected to visit, and the HMS Sabre and HMS Scimitar will continue their regular patrols. For security reasons the Ministry of Defence will not publically announce when the Tornado’s arrive, but they are not expected until after the visit from the Duke and Duchess of Wessex who arrive tomorrow, Monday, and who will stay on the Rock until Wednesday, to celebrate more events for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The Government sub-delegate for Cádiz, Javier de Torre, has said the visit ‘Does not contribute in any way to the peace which should reign in the talks which are ongoing with the fishermen.
